Dongfang Hospital is the second clinical medical college of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine (BUCM) under the national "double first-class" construction initiative, operating directly under the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine (NATCM). It is a tertiary Level A traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) hospital with distinct Chinese medicine characteristics, prominent advantages in integrating traditional Chinese and Western medicine for diagnosis and treatment, comprehensive treatment capabilities, and a holistic approach that combines medical care, teaching, research, and international TCM services.

Dongfang Hospital is among the first batch of national TCM clinical research bases, designated as a hospital for regional medical center outreach, a fostering unit for national TCM inheritance and innovation centers, a base for stroke screening and prevention, a center for TCM epidemic prevention and control, a construction unit for NATCM's TCM rehabilitation centers, and a base for national physician qualification practice skills examination and examiner training.

Dongfang Hospital in Beijing consists of one main facility and three branches, with a total of 1,377 authorized beds. It boasts two national key discipline construction projects under NATCM: TCM Cerebropathy and Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine Gastroenterology; two national regional Chinese medicine (specialist) diagnosis and treatment centers in Pediatrics and Cerebropathy; six national clinical key specialties: TCM Cerebropathy, Hepatology and Gastroenterology, Cardiology, Respiratory Fever Diseases, Gynecology, and Nursing; fourteen national key specialties designated by NATCM, including Oncology, Peripheral Vascular Diseases, Nephrology, Dermatology, Ophthalmology, Otorhinolaryngology, and Preventive Medicine; fourteen key specialties and diagnosis and treatment centers designated by the Beijing Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, covering Emergency Medicine, Orthopedics, Endocrinology, Massage, Proctology, and Clinical Pharmacy, among others.

Dongfang Hospital's branches in Qinhuangdao and Zaozhuang have respectively been listed into the fourth and fifth batches of national regional medical center construction units.

As of the end of 2023, Dongfang Hospital has 1,780 staff members, including 346 senior title experts, 6 national renowned Chinese medicine masters, 14 mentors for inheriting the academic experience of national veteran TCM experts, 2 chief scientists of national key R&D programs, and 169 supervisors for master's and doctoral students.

Dongfang Hospital, as the second clinical medical college of BUCM rooted in the East and oriented towards the world, takes the lead in collaborating with the world's top 50 universities to offer undergraduate education in TCM. Since 2005, it has jointly trained students for a double bachelor's degree in "Chinese Medicine-Biology" with Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, with over 400 graduates to date. Dongfang Hospital also spearheaded the establishment of the BUCM Chinese Medicine Center in St. Petersburg, which successfully obtained qualifications as a medical institution recognized by the Russian Federation and became the first TCM hospital in Russia to be included in the national medical insurance system.

It has been honored with titles such as "National Advanced Collective in Fighting the COVID-19 Pandemic", "National Worker Pioneer", and "National Public Hospital Party Building Demonstration Hospital", among others.
